The Historic and Classic Car Hirers' Guild

Rover P4s exude respectability and understated class. Their comfortable interiors feature well sprung leather seats, expensive Wilton carpets and quality walnut fittings and they also boast well engineered mechanicals, superb build quality and generous sound proofing. Altogether this has led to them becoming known affectionately as Auntie Rovers because spending time in one is reminiscent of visiting the home of an elderly aunt, complete with the sound of a ticking clock!

Post war Rovers had an upmarket image. The company earned a deserved reputation for excellence and its models were considered by many to be superior to the Jaguars of their day. The Rover P4 range was developed from the 1949 Model 75 and the 100 variant, which was produced from 1960 to 1962, featured servo assisted disc brakes and its 2.638 litre engine was strong and smooth. Although Rover went on to produce a faster 110 model before ending P4 production in 1964, to many enthusiasts the 100 represents the peak of P4 development.

Our much loved Rover 100 is kept in very fine fettle and it runs like a dream but P4s are very much 1950s cars in character. This, together with the fact the car is running on period style cross-ply tyres, makes this gentile saloon a little challenging to drive at first and a degree of care and patience is required to get the best out of it. But the rewards to be obtained from driving this charming old car well are in direct proportion to the amount of effort put into the task. There is enormous pleasure and satisfaction to be had from feeling at one with this fine, traditional and very British family saloon car. Furthermore, it is a lovely car to be driven in.

Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s the Rover P4 range was popular with professional types, especially Britain's bank managers and if Dad's Army's Captain Mainwaring continued driving long enough after the war we feel sure he will have had one! Travel back to a time when the discerning motorists of a bygone age were buying and driving charming motor cars like this. And try one for yourself!
