When Jaguar took over Daimler in 1960 they inherited, among other things, a rather ugly sports car called the Dart. Jaguar boss Sir William Lyons soon stopped production, but the car's V8 engine, designed by former Triumph Motorcycles engineering chief Edward Turner, did impress him and before long it was slotted into the Jaguar Mk II bodyshell to make a Daimler version of their best selling saloon.
In the 1960s Daimlers tended to be purchased by more staid types than Jaguar's regular clientele and most Daimler V8 saloons were fitted with suitably sedate automatic gearboxes, but a manual gearbox version was available by special order. Legend has it only 300 were ever made and very few now survive, but what remarkable cars they are! Like his motorcycle engines, Turner's V8 loves to rev and made free to do so by a manually controlled gearbox it makes the Daimler V8 250 a wonderful car to drive.
As with many of our cars, we know the full history of our Daimler V8 250. We are only its fourth owners from new and the original owner kept it for 22 years. The car is in fantastic mechanical fettle and its deep and sumptuous midnight blue paintwork is also in super order. Inside, this Daimler has a totally original red leather interior which just oozes character.
If you are thinking about hiring a Jaguar Mk II for your wedding car, please give this Daimler your serious consideration. It is a rare and special car.
